YOGA—SAMA

योग—सम (Yoga—Sama)

‘In equal consideration towards all human beings.’

Samatva (समत्व) is an abstract concept of yoga that encompasses a state of equanimity, equilibrium, or one who is in equilibrium, which can be achieved through balanced existence. The term itself comes from a Sanskrit root word, sama (सम), meaning equal, or even.

Samāyam (समायम्) is equal vision towards all human beings, a variant of the word, used in the Bhagavad Gita to mean even-mindedness, where it says success and failure should be treated alike, so that one becomes indifferent to such ups and downs, and thus is liberated from them. Enlightened beings such as this are able to see everyone in the same way, regardless of their outward appearance or circumstance for everyone has the same essential Self, or Ātman.

When we understand that the effort is in our hands, not the results, we can then concern ourselves only with doing our best. Outcomes may sometimes meet our expectations, but as we begin to view life more as a journey than a destination, we can calmly accept them, even when they don’t. In this way, we are better able to accept success and failure, pleasure and pain, and, as we learn to embrace both equally, we also begin to develop the equanimity that samatva embodies.

This provides a very practical solution to the difficult challenges of life. If we are sailing on the ocean in a boat, it’s natural to expect the ocean waves to rock the boat. If we get disturbed each time, our miseries would be endless; and if we do not expect the waves to arise, then we would be expecting the ocean to become something other than itself. Similarly, as we passage across the ocean of life, it tosses up all kinds of waves that are beyond our control; so if we keep struggling to eliminate all negative situations, then we will be unable to avoid unhappiness.

My goal as a yoga teacher and yoga therapist-in-training is to assist students and clients in the lifelong journey of becoming their best Self through yoga.

I use yoga postures (āsana), breathing techniques (prāṇāyāma), and meditation (dhyāna) as part of an integrated approach designed to educate and empower students and clients by guiding them toward a deeper understanding of yoga philosophy that provides practical tools they can use for healing on every level, physical, mental (emotional/intellectual), and spiritual.

I assist clients and students in developing a daily, home-based practice so they can achieve: a body of optimum health, including balance, strength and flexibility; a clear, calm and well-focused mind with a strong will and senses under control; a heart full of unconditional love and compassion; and a life filled with meaningful purpose, as well as true contentment and joy.

My ideal clients are artists and athletes seeking to enhance performance, as well as those who have experienced trauma/grief and are ready to take the next step.
